La banda fue formada en 1999.El primer álbum de <STRONG class=selflink>Avenged Sevenfold</STRONG>, <EM>Sounding The Seventh Trumpet</EM> <I>(Sonando la Séptima Trompeta)</I>, fue grabado cuando los miembros de la banda tenían dieciocho años. Fue lanzado por su primera discográfica: Good Life Recordings. Tras la unión de Synyster Gates, guitarrista solista, la banda se formó al completo. El tema de introducción "To End The Rapture" ("Para Terminar El Éxtasis") fue grabado de nuevo con Gates tocando, y el álbum fue re-lanzado en Hopeless Records. Su siguiente álbum, titulado "Waking The Fallen", también fue lanzado en Hopeless Records fue evaluado positivamente en la revista Rolling Stone magazine. Poco después de este lanzamiento <STRONG class=selflink>Avenged Sevenfold</STRONG> firmo con Warner Brothers Records.
<EM>City of Evil</EM>, el tercer álbum, fue lanzadado el 7 de junio de 2005. En él su estilo se aleja más del metalcore, y M.Shadows eligió abandonar los gritos que había hecho en los dos anteriores álbums. Aunque Shadows admite que sufrió daños en su garganta y sus cuerdas vocales, y pasó por cirugía para corregir esos problemas, dice que el cambio en su estilo no es consecuencia de ello. En su nuevo DVD <I>All Excess</I>, Mudrock, productor del segundo y el tercer álbum, dijo antes de <I>Waking the fallen</I> que Shadows argumentó que quería un CD medio gritado, para después tener uno sin apenas gritos. Este objetivo se alcanzó con <I>City of Evil</I>. Aún con esto, el vocalista mantiene que es capaz de gritar mejor que antes tras el entrenamiento vocal llevado a cabo por Ron Anderson, que había trabajado con otros artistas, tales como Axl Rose, Kylie Minogue o Chris Cornell.
El nombre del grupo hace referencia al Génesis, en la Biblia, cuando Caín es sentenciado a vivir en el exilio por asesinar a su hermano. Dios lo marcó de forma que nadie pudiera matarlo o vengarse. El hombre que se atreviese a matar a Cain tendría <I>vengeance upon him sevenfold</I>. El título de <I>Chapter Four</I> hace referencia a Genesis, 4:15; el capítulo en el que tiene lugar la historia de Caín y Abel. El tema de la canción también parecer ser esta historia. <I>Beast and the Harlot</I> también está basada en la Biblia, narra en primera persona la historia del castigo a la Gran Babilonia, imperio mundial y base de una falsa religión. En <I>The Wicked End</I> se dice varias veces <I>dust the apple off, savor each bite, and deep inside you know Adam was right</I> (muerde la manzana, saborea cada mordisco, y en el fondo sabrás que Adam tenía razón), haciendo referencia a Eva comiendo la fruta prohibida. Aunque el nombre del grupo y de sus componentes en el escenario tiene que ver con la religión, M. Shadows dijo en una entrevista que no son un grupo religioso. En este grupo hay algo que me encanta, y es que nunca inculcamos ningún tipo de creencias religiosas o políticas en la gente. La música está ahí para entretener y quizá provocar reflexiones en ambos lados, pero no intentamos realmente poner nada en la garganta de nadie.
